As a SHE personnel in the telecommunications industry, I believe businesses have a responsibility to help solve global challenges such as COVID-19 and climate change while operating safely and sustainably. In my opinion, telecom companies can contribute by improving workplace health and safety, reducing carbon emissions, using renewable energy at telecom sites, managing electronic waste responsibly, and ensuring safe working conditions for field technicians.
I also believe telecom companies should expand affordable connectivity to underserved communities, support remote working and digital services, and promote employee wellbeing. Sustainable and shared prosperity can be achieved when businesses balance profit with social impact, environmental responsibility, and ethical leadership. However, I believe more research and investment are still needed, especially in Africa, to better address ESG and sustainability challenges in the telecom sector.
