Since ESG has a positive impact on the environment and various stakeholder groups, it has been increasingly integrated into organizations. Which one or two ESG practices would you like to see implemented in your organization?

The one ESG practice I would like to implement would be to have an annual sustainability report to track the performance of my organization

Re: How do I implement ESG in my organization
Implementing ESG in an organisation can start from our core activities, operation in the office or plant; as well as with relevant stakeholders in the organisation's supply chain.
Yes, the key is to build ESG into how you run your business. This will take some effort and time, but there can be quick wins and low hanging fruit. You have quoted a good example, simply by implementing some degree of ethical sourcing. And you can start really small. For example corporate gifts, and catering.
Good suggestion, Jeremy. Currently this is mandated by stock exchanges in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. But this means only listed companies. It would be great if employees should demand this. In Genashtim, we have trained a large number of our people in GRI, and we are currently working on our sustainability report.
Begin by analyzing your company’s current practices, evaluating the quality of raw materials, and hiring skilled professionals with hands-on knowledge and industry experience to drive ESG implementation. Next, assess your available resources and consider starting with one ESG element, such as Environment, before progressing to Social and Governance. Focus on what is most feasible and applicable at each stage. Engage stakeholders and investors early on, encouraging their active participation to support the successful implementation of ESG initiatives.

ESG is implemented by achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Our organization along with our employees are actively involved in achieving SDG, thanks to the nature of the organizational set up of the company. We are implementing by good health and wellbeing, quality education, gender equality, climate action. Considering we are all working from home, there is no traffic on the daily basis, which means zero pollution because of the traffic. Happy to say that we are implementing these goals and we are speaking for these goals day by day by implementing in our organization.
It is great that you are using the SDG goals as "North Stars". And yes, you are right with the alignments.

As we are walking the talk and actively practicing the principles and practices of ESG in our organistion, perhaps we can drive it further through educating our staff on the mutual benefits and value that can be derived from ESG. One way of doing this would be to feature ESG related information/articles or developments in our monthly newsletter.
Another wonderful suggestion. You please make a "demand" to Mactayren, and do this in our open Teams channel so that everyone can see.

I am proud to say that Genashtim is very active in making sure that we are all part of a sustainable organization. Genashtim promotes a life-long opportunities for all that focuses on marginalized communities (persons with disabilities, disadvantaged people like the HIV-infected, seniors, and women living under oppression). But I want to see more of Employee training and education programs, Workplace policies.
Totally agree. Please make this "demand" from your company. Put forward your suggestions in as much detail as possible.

Considering that Genashtim's operation has been outstanding for the value of E and S, reviewing the G value would be the best way to upscale the performance of this company. Establishing set of clear policies reflecting companies operation. For instance, performance-based selection for promotion or third-party involvement for grievance. Even if such activities has been implemented, clear policies will remain required for annual reporting or any international reporting framework that will be applied
Agree with this, but if I may suggest to bear in mind "substance over form". Many companies spend a lot of energy on the "form", with nothing much to show on "substance". What you end up with is pages and pages of policy which becomes the ends , not the means. In my 25 years of corporate life, I have sadly seen too much of this.
This comment also applies for Rani's posting.

Perhaps we can further enhance our existing ESG practices by reviewing our internal governance policies from time to time in line with the ever transforming global business and social environment.

I would like to see more training for internal employees so they can actually put ESG practices into play to make sure the overall company is heading in the right direction.
As Shasho mentioned, Genashtim is already doing quite a lot when measuring up with the SDGs. However if you have any specific suggestions, it is really your duty to bring them up.

Re: How do I implement ESG in my organization
It is evident that a company has to practice ESG to become a sustainable organization. I personally feel it would be in both the company and its employees best interest to make it mandatory for everyone in the company to partake in the training courses that focuses on ESG.
And this is a good example which Genashtim is practising. All employees of all companies should urge their management about this.
We are all know that Genashtim as a company already implement ESG in almost every aspects, One thing that i would do is to set the culture especially for its employees, so not only Genashtim as an organization implements ESG but also all employees will aware about ESG and its purposes. we can do this by training the employees about the importance of ESG.
Exactly what we are doing with this eLearning module. And you are right, this should be just the beginning.
It is proud to say that Genashtim has practiced ESG.
With the practice of remote working, the company has played a role in reducing air pollution. No additional CO2 emmision caused by commuting to and from the workplace.
Another practice, Genashtim plays an active role in overcoming marginalized community issues by employing employees beyond gender, physical conditions, or other conditions that prevent them from getting opportunities in other companies.
But, as the world changes, competencies of course needs to be improved. Training on related fields, socio-cultural issues and other topics that improve employee abilities so that in the long term, the company will advance even more
Remote work, when done properly also promotes physical health, mental health, and personal relationships with people at home.
Good point on socio-cultural training. We can do this in a fun way in the CORE.
Current events like the recent pandemic and climate change make us realize that we are not masters of our planet but rather keepers of nature. ESG is now more important than ever as companies have the responsibility and the resources to accomplish positive climate action, building a more sustainable and durable future. The ESG practices I think are most urgent to implement in most companies of my hometown are air and water pollution and water usage, waste management and fair labor practices.
As you know, Genashtim is already a carbon negative company. This is more challenging for companies which are not 100% remote work, especially with manufacturing activities. But important to make a start - always think about quick wins and low hanging fruit.
Genashtim has incorporated ESG into its operations, including remote work, positive job creation particularly among the marginalized, and daily carbon-negative practices. If there is an ESG practice I wish to implement, it is to increase employee capacity-building initiatives.
Can you please elaborate on what you have in mind, Mazrina?
For each department, maybe they should go through training related to their scope of work. This can create in-house expertise. Also, maybe some cross skill training, offering people from other departments the chance to go through different courses so we can enhance their flexibility. This can eventually add value to the organization.
As a PLC, we have embedded sustainability goals as part of our business strategy with the establishment of a Sustainability Working Committee (SWC) since 2018. Our focus on the 3 core ESG themes is interconnected with the Company's KRAs and KPIs.
We are strong in the Governance aspect and a direction that we are heading is to improve on both the Environmental and Social aspect of the ESG.
Although we do have MSPO and myGAP certification from the relevant Ministries for our Plantation division, having an assessment on how we have progressed in the ESG goals as a Group would help us to address the gaps, understand our strengths and enhance on what we have done well. Just started exploring B Corp certification.

The higher education industry and/or higher institutions can support ESG through implementation of ESG policies, extension of purposeful research to generate new knowledge to solve some of the current apparent ESG issues.

It is critically important that institutes of learning embed ESG into the curriculum, and nurture this amongst our younger people.
My organization could benefit from a more inclusive work location policy - increased hybrid work would allow for a more a diverse workforce (by both ability and demographic), and would reduce our environmental footprint.
Absolutely, I encourage you to propose this to your management. The concept of an inclusive work location policy with hybrid options aligns with diversity goals and environmental responsibility, offering a range of advantages for the organization.

Re: How do I implement ESG in my organization
In order to direct our sustainability efforts, I would support the adoption of the following Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices within our company by setting measurable and explicit ESG goals. By following this procedure, important issues are addressed in an organized manner, and advancement toward beneficial effects on the environment and society is monitored.
Thanks Asmira. indeed those are important.
I must say they are very important
Using renewable energy sources to power electricity.
In addition to companies integrating ESG strategy initiatives, implementing a program that rewards employees for their personal positive impacts can encourage them to advocate for ESG principles. Such initiatives not only foster a culture of sustainability but also enhance employee engagement and satisfaction, contributing to overall organizational success.

1. Renewable Energy Integration
Why? Mining operations consume significant energy, and switching to renewable energy (e.g., solar or wind) can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower long-term energy costs.
How? Install solar panels to power parts of the mine's operations and complement this with energy-efficient systems to reduce overall consumption. Partner with local renewable energy providers to promote sustainable development in the region.
2. Community Engagement and Development Programs
Why? Effective stakeholder management is crucial for maintaining a social license to operate. Addressing community needs creates long-term positive relationships and demonstrates social responsibility.
How? Expand CSR initiatives by focusing on skills development, healthcare, or education for local communities. For instance, offer scholarships or vocational training in nuclear science or environmental management, tying it to the theme of sustainable development.
These practices will not only improve your ESG standing but also benefit your stakeholders and ensure operational sustainability.
